Ministry Purpose

Our purpose as a church is to discover the will of God and follow it. The source of our direction is the Bible, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psa 119:105). From this scripture we learn not to assume anything in the process. The word as a lamp to our feet confirms the light to our path. Every step we take toward the purpose must follow the precepts of the word of God.

The Bible reveals one overall purpose for the church. The church, as a local assembly of believers, is called to discipleship. By the grace of God, we are to make as many people as we can as much like Jesus Christ as we can. We take seriously that the disciple making process is to be done with integrity and much patience and with kindness, but without compromise. This involves a two-fold process:

1. The local church is to gather to build each other up in the faith.

The church must gather. The process of discipleship mandates the assembling of believers together. The purpose of the church as designed by God requires this gathering together of the local or community church. The meeting of believers is so essential to the process of discipleship that the exhortation to it is non-negotiable. All Christians are disciples and have need of the local church:

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging [one another]; and all the more as you see the day drawing near (Hebrews 10:24-25).

2. The local church is to scatter to make disciples.

The church must scatter. A disciple is someone whose thankful heart for all Christ has done on his behalf moves him to seek to please Him with his life. To this end, he becomes a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2) for service in Christ's disciple-making ministry. A disciple is instructed by Christ to go out into the world and bring people to Him:

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18:20).
